2. What is Batak Craft?
Our goal is to rehabilitate the Batak Tribe’s physical and cultural health by addressing the root causes of their depopulation through enterprise facilitation: specifically, by creating a sustainable basket-weaving business for the Batak. The campaign was created to give our marginalized tribes a wider reach and a global voice.
3. Our Process
To raise global awareness on the Batak’s extinction issue, we’ve created an online campaign from scratch.

3.1 Brand Development
Reminiscent of the Batak’s hunter-gatherer origins, we’ve designed the logo with an arrow piercing through a circular brush stroke.
The arrow represents Batak Craft’s progressive approach towards indigenous transitions–ending the vicious cycle of poverty and extinction among ethnic groups who fail to adapt to the fast-changing economy. The circle is also a symbol of sustainability to drive our progress.
3.2 Web Design and Development
With an international and culturally-informed market in mind, we designed the website with a minimalist aesthetic to focus the audience’s attention the Batak weaving patterns.
My passion for literature, familiarity with Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and continuous self-education in powerful copywriting – all helped me create a communication style that’s optimistic, honest, informative, and solutions-oriented.
Having a close relationship with the Batak Tribe has enabled me to capture candid moments (that I otherwise won’t have access to if I didn’t build a relationship with them first).
3.5 Crowdfunding Campaign
In partnership with Coopita, a global platform created for craftsmen and artisans based in Asia, Batak Craft has launched Project Bamboo in May 2017, a crowdfunding campaign that works to bring the Batak Tribe’s bamboo products to market. Become a supporter today to help the vanishing Batak Tribe survive and thrive in the modern economy.
3.6 Social Media Marketing
To ensure the world gets the best learning and shopping experience from our campaign websites, we use multimedia to communicate. That includes recording voice-over clips with a high-quality recorder, and capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments through video. We then combine the two to deliver a powerful message.
